What are Pheromones?
Pheromones are a class of semiochemicals emitted by insects to communicate with other individuals of the same species. Pheromones are often released from the exocrine glands as liquids that evaporate into the air and travel through a long range. In this way, a female insect releases a chemical substance into the air that signals her availability to a male insect of the same species miles away. Males usually perceive the signal as a “scent” through the means of their antennae and fly towards the female to mate. Pheromones are an effective signal of attracting mate considering their capacity to travel long distances and remain active in the air for days. Over the past 50 years, pheromones have been widely applied in the field of agriculture, forestry, and even urban pest management given that they are a safe and sustainable alternative to harmful pesticides. As an excellent method of pest-control strategy, synthetic pheromones have already been used by growers in the United States, Europe and parts of Middle-East, and their use is increasing steadily worldwide. Our products contain the synthetic copies of the insect’s natural sex pheromone. When released into the air, the target pest is effected in ways that may help growers detect or control the pest using the following:
